Emotional Regulation

Emotional regulation is a fundamental skill that supports mental well-being, healthy relationships, and resilience in the face of stress. At Same Time Next Week, we help clients understand and strengthen their ability to regulate their emotions. We support clients with recognizing, managing, and expressing emotions. Specifically, we empower clients to communicate in ways that are authentic, meaningful, and aligned with their values. Even during times of uncertainty, transition, or emotional overwhelm, you will gain confidence and be better equipped to process your emotions. These feelings may include anxiety, grief, trauma, or transition.

Emotional awareness and expression are crucial components of emotional intelligence. Emotional awareness involves tuning in to your internal world. This can be done by recognizing your emotions, understanding where they come from, and noticing how they shift over time. Self-awareness forms the foundation of emotional regulation. Expressing emotions skillfully means communicating your feelings, both verbally and nonverbally, in ways that foster connection rather than conflict. This includes tone of voice, body language, and facial expressions. When emotional awareness and expression are practiced together, they create a positive feedback loop: understanding your emotions helps you express them more clearly, and expressing them helps you understand them better.

Many clients come to therapy feeling overwhelmed by intense emotions or, conversely, disconnected and unsure of what they’re feeling. Both experiences point to a disruption in emotional regulation. Emotions are like waves. They rise, peak, and eventually pass. You can't stop the waves, but you can learn to surf.  Instead of getting swept away or trying to suppress feelings, therapy offers tools to ride these emotional waves with greater balance, acceptance, and confidence.

Your emotions are like a compass. They guide you, but you choose the direction you walk in. Emotions provide important information about what matters to us, but they don’t have to dictate our choices. Therapy can help you pause, reflect, and respond in ways that are grounded in your values rather than reactive patterns, allowing for greater emotional freedom and choice.

For those who struggle with emotional intensity, imagine your emotional experience as a stereo system. You can’t always change the song, but you can learn to turn the volume up or down. Emotional regulation includes learning strategies for distress tolerance, calming the nervous system, and adjusting the intensity of emotions without shutting them off completely. This might involve mindfulness, grounding exercises, breath work, self-soothing techniques, or cognitive techniques.

Some clients carry unexpressed emotions for years, unsure how to release them safely. Holding in emotions is like inflating a balloon. If you never let air out, eventually it bursts. Letting out a little at a time keeps it safe. Therapy provides a secure and supportive environment to unpack those emotions gradually and without judgment, helping to prevent emotional overload or burnout.

By cultivating emotional awareness and learning how to express and regulate feelings, clients are better equipped to manage stress, navigate relationships, and make thoughtful decisions. Emotional regulation is not about eliminating difficult feelings but about relating to them in a new way. This advanced approach will honor your experience while supporting your overall mental health.

We are here to help you develop the insight, tools, and confidence to navigate your emotions. With clarity, resilience, and self-compassion, we will move forward together.
