Autism

From our home office in Fort Worth, Texas, we at Same Time Next Week? Counseling & Consultation, take great care to offer support for and treat autistic clients.

Autism, or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by persistent challenges in social interaction, communication, and repetitive behaviors. The word “spectrum” is key: it reflects the broad diversity in how autism presents from one individual to another. Some may need significant support in daily life, while others live independently and thrive with minimal assistance. Each person’s experience is uniquely shaped by their environment, strengths, learning style, sensory preferences, and evolving needs over time. Co-occurring conditions such as anxiety, ADHD, or sensory processing differences may also shape how you navigate daily life.

At Same Time Next Week, we view autism through a neurodiversity-affirming lens. Rather than pathologizing differences, we recognize that autistic individuals experience and process the world in ways that are valid, meaningful, and often deeply insightful. Autism is like running a different operating system. It’s not broken, it just processes the world differently. Some unique strengths and challenges come with being autistic, and this forms the foundation of our approach to care.

Autistic individuals often experience the world with heightened perception and sensitivity. A simple sound, flickering light, or social dynamic that goes unnoticed by others may be overwhelming or deeply engaging to someone on the spectrum. Autism is like seeing the world in high definition: details jump out that others don’t notice.  While this heightened sensitivity can create stress in certain environments, it can also point to remarkable strengths, such as deep focus, pattern recognition, and creativity.

Common traits of autism include difficulty understanding social cues, navigating unspoken rules, and building relationships in ways that are expected or typical. Many autistic individuals report feeling like they’re on the outside looking in. It’s like there’s a glass door between you and the world. You can see it, but you can’t always engage the way others do. This feeling of separation can lead to frustration, isolation, and misunderstanding. This is especially true when others expect neurotypical communication or behavior.

Some individuals with autism may have exceptional talents in areas like mathematics, music, art, memory, or systems thinking. Others may find deep comfort and enjoyment in familiarity with things such as structure, routines, and repetitive patterns. These preferences are not limitations but part of the rich diversity that the autism spectrum encompasses.

The cause of autism is not fully understood, but research points to a complex interaction of genetic and environmental factors. While there is no cure, early diagnosis and targeted interventions like behavioral therapy, occupational therapy, and communication support can make a profound difference. With support, development, learning, and emotional well-being can be fostered.

Our therapeutic approach is collaborative, affirming, and tailored to the individual. We work with autistic children, teens, and adults to build essential skills. These include emotional regulation, social understanding, self-advocacy, and stress management. We also support families and caregivers in creating environments where autistic individuals can thrive.

With the right support, autistic individuals can lead fulfilling lives, develop meaningful relationships, and contribute their unique gifts to the world. Whether you are seeking clarity through diagnosis, navigating daily challenges, or working toward long-term goals, support is here for you. We are here to walk alongside you with compassion, curiosity, and respect.
